Help & answers
Frequently asked questions
The questions parents and carers ask us most. Can't find what you need? Get in touch and we'll help.
Who does Gaitway help?
We support children and young people aged 0–25 living with cerebral palsy and other neurological motor conditions, across Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland — along with the families who care for them.
What conditions do you support?
We work with children whose movement is affected by neurological conditions — most commonly cerebral palsy, as well as acquired brain injury and other conditions affecting motor development. If you're unsure whether Gaitway is right for your child, get in touch and we'll talk it through with you.
What is Conductive Education (the Pető method)?
Conductive education is a specialist approach, developed by Professor András Pető, that helps children with movement disorders learn to move and become more independent. It combines physical, thinking and social development around real, everyday goals. It's the approach at the heart of Gaitway's programmes, used alongside neurophysiotherapy.
How do we start — do we need a referral?
You don't need a formal referral. Get in touch with us as a parent, carer or professional and tell us about your child. We'll arrange an assessment to understand their needs and goals, then find the right programme. There's no pressure — we'll simply talk you through the options.
Where is Gaitway based?
We're based at Crescent Vitality, 27 Clonard Crescent, Belfast BT13 2QN, and we support families across Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
How often and how intensive are the programmes?
We run intensive programmes throughout the year — summer intensives, Easter, Halloween and midterm camps, and ongoing therapy support. Short, occasional sessions are often not enough for children with neurological conditions; consistent, intensive practice gives the best chance of lasting progress in movement, independence and confidence.
How is Gaitway funded, and is there a cost?
The Gaitway Organisation is a registered charity (NIC107729) and receives no government funding — our work is made possible by donations and community support. Please contact us to discuss programmes and any costs for your family.
Is the therapy evidence-based?
Yes. Our approach draws on published research in paediatric neuro-rehabilitation, and each of our therapy pages links to peer-reviewed studies. We're also honest with families about what the evidence does and doesn't yet show for newer therapies, and we tailor every programme to the individual child.
Still have a question?
Our team is happy to talk through anything — with no pressure.
